COVID-19 in South Dakota: 354 new cases in total; The death toll is 2,202; Active cases in 5,819.

SIOUX FALLS, SD – A total of 354 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Monday, bringing the state’s total case count to 150,350 as of Friday (149,996).

The number of active cases reported on Monday is 5,819, compared to 5,868 reported on Friday.

The death toll from COVID-19 is 2,202, compared to Friday (2,189). The deaths include eight men and five women in the following age ranges: 40-49 (1); 50-59 (1); 60-69 (4); 70-79 (5); 80+ (2).

There were four deaths in Minnehaha County, two in Lawrence County, and one in each of Codington, Grant, Meade, Oglala Lakota, Pennington, Turner, and Yankton counties.

The current hospitalizations are 193 as of Friday (185). The total of hospitalizations amounts to 7,671, compared to Friday (7,660).

The total number of recovered cases now stands at 142,329, compared to Friday (141,939). The latest seven-day PCR test positivity rate for the state is 13.5% from October 8-14.

DOH currently reports the total testing each day. 1,556,056 total tests have been reported as of Monday, 4,716 more than the 1,551,880 total tests on Friday.

Of the 66 counties in South Dakota, 57 are listed as “high” community size. The “high” spread in the community is 100 or more cases per 100,000 or a PCR test positivity rate of 10% or more.

627 cases of Delta variants (B.1.617.2, AY.1-AY.25) have been detected in South Dakota through sentinel surveillance.

There have been 172 cases of B.1.1.7 (Alpha variant), three cases of P.1. (Gamma variant), and two cases of B.1.351 (Beta variant).

DOH announced changes to the way it reports vaccines on the COVID-19 dashboard beginning Thursday, October 14. It now includes a breakdown of how many people have received booster doses. As of Monday, 65.95% of the population 12 years and older have received at least one dose, while 56.98% have completed the vaccination series.

485,516 doses of the Pfizer vaccine, 337,356 of the Moderna vaccine, and 29,717 doses of the Janssen vaccine have been administered.

158,773 people have completed two doses of Moderna, an increase of 67 from Friday. There have been 191,661 people who have received two doses of Pfizer, which is 3,181 less than on Friday.

Regarding booster doses, 27,416 people have received the third dose of Pfizer, and 2,916 have received the third dose of Moderna.
