60 people died in militant attacks in eastern Congo.
Beni: More than 60 persons were killed during an attack by militias early Wednesday in a displaced people camp in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Both sources confirmed to the media they believed that the CODELCO militia was responsible for the murders that occurred around 0200 GMT in the Savo camp in Bule within Ituri province.
Ituri, the army’s spokesperson Jules Ngongo confirmed the attack by CODECO and gave a pro forma toll of 20 killed.
Congolese troops contacted the militia on Tuesday evening. Still, the militia switched direction and sped past them and walked towards the camp, the officer said.
CODECO is among many militias operating in the eastern Congo amid ongoing tensions regarding land and resources.
The militia’s members are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people in Ituri and forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes, as per the United Nations.
In recent times, it has targeted camps of displacement where a few people settled after fleeing from another attack by CODECO.
“I first heard cries when I was still in bed. Then several minutes of gunshots. I fled, and I saw torches and people crying for help. Finally, I realized it was the CODECO militiamen who had invaded our site,” said Lokana Bale Lussa, a camp resident.
“We have counted more than 60 dead and (more) seriously injured,” said the official stated. “We really need security because we can’t access our farms, and now we’re pursued even in our camps.”

“Initial reports indicate that as many as 59 civilians were killed and a further 40 injured,” the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) released the statement.
According to the statement, two students from an NRC-supported school NRC were among the dead and that the attackers used machetes and guns.
The Wednesday attack occurred away from the eastern Congo’s Tin mines. SINCE NOVEMBER, the NRC reported that 68 people had been killed in earlier attacks at five camps in the same region.
CODECO’s fighters come primarily out of the Lendu farmer community that has for a long time been at war in the past with Hema herders.
The NRC stated that the Savo refugee camp is home to 24,000 residents of the 1.7 million people displaced in Ituri province. A minimum of 1,200 civilians were killed by Ituri provincial in 2021.
