TikTok paret, China’s ByteDance, is said to be exploring the sale of TikTok’s operations in India to its unicorn rival Glance, Bloomberg News reported Saturday. The discussions, started by Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp, are private, early and complex, according to the report, which quotes people familiar with the matter. Glance’s parent company, mobile advertising technology company InMobi, also owns the short video app Roposo, which has gained popularity after the government banned TikTok in July last year.

SoftBank is a sponsor of InMobi Pte, as well as TikTok’s Chinese parent ByteDance, the report additional. Softbank, ByteDance and InMobi did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.

Last month, ByteDance cut its team of more than 2,000 in India and said in a company memo that it is not sure whether to resume operations in India.

The move came after India decided to maintain its ban on TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps following responses from companies on issues such as compliance and privacy. According to the Bloomberg report, the government will insist that TikTok user data and technology remain within its borders if talks progress.
