3.7 magnitude earthquakes felt in Jammu and Kashmir

A mild earthquake struck Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday with its epicenter in the Ladakh region. There were no reports of casualties or property damage.

The earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale occurred at 7.39 a.m., officials from the meteorological department (MET) said.

“The coordinates of the earthquake are latitude 36.62 degrees north and longitude 74.56 degrees east. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Ladakh region. It occurred 200 kilometers inside the earth’s crust,” MET officials said.

Kashmir is located in a region very prone to earthquakes and tremors have caused destruction here in the past.

More than 80,000 people died on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) by an earthquake that occurred on October 8, 2005. The earthquake measured 7.3 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was in Muzaffarabad.
