Former Tennis Player Azarenka of Belarus was devastated by Ukraine’s brutality.
Former world number one in tennis Victoria Azarenka of Belarus has expressed her sadness over the people’s suffering in the violence in Ukraine following Russia invading the country last week.
The conflict caused the deaths of more than 2000 Ukrainian civilians. In addition, Ukraine’s crisis services declared on Wednesday it damaged hundreds of structures, including schools, homes, hospitals, and transportation structures.
“I’m devastated by the actions that have taken place over the last several days against and in Ukraine,” Azarenka declared on Twitter.
“It’s heartbreaking to see how many innocent people have been affected and continue to be affected by such violence.”
Belarus is an ally to Russia and has served as an important location for Russian forces preparing to launch the assault that Russia describes as”a “special operation.”
“Since my early childhood, I have always seen and experienced Ukrainian and Belarusian people, as well as both nations, friendly and supportive of one another,” the 32-year-old explained.
“It is hard to witness the violent separation that is currently taking place instead of supporting and finding compassion for each other.”
Since the beginning of the war, Russian and Belarusian teams and athletes have been excluded from international competitions in all sports.
The tennis authorities have banned players from playing under the flag and name of their respective countries.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Azarenka said she would like peace.
“My heart is with everyone directly and indirectly impacted by this war that is causing such pain and suffering for so many,” Azarenka stated.
“I hope and wish for peace and an end to the war.”
The United Nations has estimated that more than 870,000 people have fled Ukraine since the war began last week in what is expected to become Europe’s biggest refugee issue in the previous century and force millions of people to flee.
