Labor rights activist Nodeep Kaur was granted bail in connection with an extortion case filed against her.
However, the 23-year-old activist will have to remain in jail as her declaration of bail in another case was rejected on January 12.
Kaur is currently housed in a Karnal prison.
A court granted him bail on Thursday in the case registered against him at the Kundli police station on December 28 last year, a lawyer said Friday.
Kaur, a member of Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan, faces three cases, including charges of attempted murder and extortion.
She was arrested for allegedly making gherao at an industrial unit and demanding money from the company in Sonipat, Haryana police had said.
On Thursday, Punjab Minister Aruna Chaudhary had urged the National Commission for Women (NCW) to intervene and secure the release of Nodeep Kaur.
The Minister of Social Security, Women and Child Development, Aruna Chaudhary, appealed to the NCW for the government of Punjab, through the state commission for women, to provide legal assistance to Kaur.
The Haryana government should be ordered to organize a meeting of a commission delegation with the labor rights activist, the minister had said.
The Punjab State Women’s Commission had requested a status report from the Sonipat Senior Superintendent of Police before February 15 on the Kaur matter.
Punjab panel chair Manisha Gulati said that Kaur, a resident of Giadarh village of Muktsar district in Punjab, was arrested at the Kundli border.
He said that through a written statement, the Sonipat SSP received instructions for a superior officer to investigate Kaur’s case.
On February 8, the Punjab State Commission for Registered Castes had asked an additional chief secretary in the state to intervene in the matter and grant him relief as soon as possible.
