Who is Matt LaFleur?

The Green Bay Packers head coach is Matt LaFleur. Before accepting the position in Green Bay, LaFleur had ten years of coaching experience in the NFL.

He initially rose to prominence in the coaching community while mentoring Matt Ryan for two years as the quarterback’s coach with the Atlanta Falcons.

LaFleur assisted Ryan in leading the Falcons to Super Bowl LI and winning NFL MVP accolades. He also served as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans and the Los Angeles Rams for two seasons.

LaFleur started working as a coach at his alma school, Saginaw Valley State, in 2003. He had started as a quarterback there for three seasons, guiding his team to the Division II playoffs each season.

At the collegiate level, LaFleur also served as a coach at Central Michigan, Northern Michigan, Ashland, and Notre Dame.

Playing Career of Matt LaFleur

From 1998 to 1999, LaFleur attended Western Michigan University. While attending classes there, he was a wide receiver.

Later, in 2000, he changed schools to Saginaw Valley State.

In 2000, LaFleur began playing quarterback, and he did so up until 2002.

He briefly played for the Omaha Beef in the National Indoor Football League. He was the quarterback’s backup.

The following summer, Matt joined the Montana Billings Outlaws.

Career as a Coach for Matt LaFleur

In 2003, LaFleur began working as a coach at Saginaw Valley State, where he had previously played and studied.

He was a graduate assistant on offense. 

In the nearby high schools, he also worked as a substitute teacher, primarily teaching arithmetic.

LaFleur then moved to Mount Pleasant, Michigan, to work as an offensive assistant at Central Michigan University in 2004 and 2005.

In 2006, he began working as a quarterback and receivers coach at Northern Michigan University in Marquette.

Similarly, in 2007 he worked as the offensive coordinator for Ashland University in Ohio.

Texans of Houston

The Houston Texans hired LaFleur in 2008 to serve as an offensive assistant.

During his two years with the Houston Texans, he performed an excellent job of helping wide receivers and quarterbacks alike.

While working there, he became close with the offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.

Redskins of Washington

In 2010, LaFleur moved to Washington to work as the quarterbacks’ coach.

For the 2012 season, he was tasked with coaching rookie quarterbacks Kirk Cousins LaFleur and Robert Griffin III.

Dame de Paris

LaFleur spent six years working for the NFL. Then he went back to playing collegiate football. In 2014, he was the University of Notre Dame’s quarterback’s coach.

Falcons of Atlanta

The NFL then welcomed LaFleur back on February 5, 2015. He began his career as the Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback trainer.

On February 8, 2017, LaFleur accepted the offensive coordinator position with the Los Angeles Rams coaching staff. 

Sean McVay, the head coach, was his boss.

Matt and McVay previously collaborated when both were playing for the Washington Redskins.

Titans of Tennessee

On January 30, 2018, LaFleur joined the Tennessee Titans. He also served as their offensive coordinator for a while.

He was a member of Mike Vrabel’s new coaching staff.

LaFleur also had the benefit of calling the Titans’ plays.

Even though the role was the same, it was a promotion from his previous organization.

As of the end of the regular season, his offense was rated 25th in the NFL.

LaFleur tore his Achilles while playing basketball a short time later, on May 30, 2019.

Season 2019

Against the Chicago Bears, LaFleur made his regular-season coaching debut. 2019 September 5 was the date.

The Green Bay Packers won their first game under their new coach 10-3.

LaFleur also made history by being the first Green Bay head coach since Vince Lombardi in 1959 to win his first matchup with the Bears.

In the new coach’s first season as the Green Bay Packers head coach, the team ended with a 13-3 record.

LaFleur later became the first rookie head coach of the Packers to win ten games, go to the postseason, and take home the NFC North title.

Similarly, he made history by being the first player to go 6-0 in division play.

Since Jim Harbaugh achieved it with the San Francisco 49ers in 2011, the thirteen wins were the most by a rookie head coach.

Similarly, he guided the group to their first playoff appearance since the 2016 campaign.

They defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the game. 

To go to the NFC Championship Game in the divisional round of the playoffs, the team won 28-23.

But the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers defeated the Green Bay Packers 37-20.

Season 2020

By winning all four of his first games as a coach in 2020, Matt advanced to early week 5. Unfortunately, LaFleur’s performance against the Minnesota Vikings resulted in a 22-28 defeat.

Fortunately, Matt defeated the Chicago Bears 36-16 in week 17 after facing them. After that, matt and the Packers played host to the Los Angeles Rams in the 2020–21 postseason.

They were headed by LaFleur’s former employers, Rams coach Sean McVay, and had the best scoring defense in the league.
