In a statement, the Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) said Milkha is doing better than Thursday when he was taken to the hospital with low oxygen levels.
“Based on his medical parameters today, his condition has been observed better and more stable than yesterday,” said PGIMER official spokesman Professor Ashok Kumar.
Kumar said Milkha is being closely monitored by a team of three doctors at PGIMER.
Milkha’s wife, Nirmal, 82, who had also contracted COVID-19 days after her husband caught it, remains in the ICU at Fortis Hospital, which said her condition has deteriorated.
“Ms. Milkha Singh has deteriorated with the progression of the disease and the increased need for oxygen. Currently, she receives HFNC (high-flow nasal cannula) and NIV (non-invasive ventilation) intermittently,” the hospital said in your health bulletin.
Hours earlier, Milkha’s son Jeev also said his father was stable and thanked the prime minister for calling his father.
“Many thanks to Prime Minister @narendramodi for taking time out of his busy schedule and calling Dad to find out about his health,” Jeev said in a tweet.
Modi spoke with Milkha on Friday and expressed his hope that the iconic former athlete will return soon to “bless and inspire the athletes who will participate in the Tokyo Olympics.”
Milkha was released from a private hospital in Mohali last Sunday where he received treatment for the infection.
However, he also continued to receive oxygen at home.
Jeev had arrived in Chandigarh from Dubai on May 22. Her older sister, Mona Milkha Singh, who is a doctor in the United States, has also come here.
Milkha is suspected of contracting the infection through a house helper.
The legendary athlete is a four-time Asian Games gold medalist and 1958 Commonwealth Games champion, but his best performance remains fourth in the 400-meter final at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
His time in the Italian capital was a national record for 38 years until Paramjeet Singh broke it in 1998.
He also represented India in the 1956 and 1964 Olympics and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1959.
