33-Year-Old Arrested For Trying To Extort Money From Man In Delhi.

A 33-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to extort money from a person in the national capital, police said Saturday.

The defendant, Tarun, who was depressed after suffering monetary losses during the Covid-induced lockdown, hatched a scheme with the victim’s ex-girlfriend to extort money, they said.

Tarun, a Mangolpuri resident, called the victim and asked him to pay five lakh rupees otherwise, falsely implicating him in a rape case, police said.

The author Ankit told the police that he was in a relationship with a woman for about two years. The woman along with Tarun had been demanding five lakh rupees.

“On Friday, the police received a notice about the defendant’s presence near the Sanjay Gandhi hospital. Subsequently, the police set a trap near the hospital and detained him,” said Deputy Police Commissioner (Rohini) Pranav Tayal.

Questioning revealed that Tarun had suffered heavy monetary losses in his business during the shutdown due to which he was depressed, DCP said.

He knew the woman. To help Tarun and earn easy money, they hatched a conspiracy to extort money from the plaintiff, police said.

Efforts are being made to catch the woman, police said.
