'It'll get even better': Ravichandran Ashwin backs Rishabh Pant amid criticism

Ravichandran Ashwin of India jumped to fifth place among off-roaders in the latest ICC Test Players Ranking following his brilliant bat and ball performance against England in the second match, while his captain Virat Kohli remained in fifth place among batters.

Ashwin hit an excellent 106 in the second inning for India and took eight wickets with his detour in Test 2 against England in Chennai, which the hosts won by 317 runs on Tuesday.

He has registered 336 points on a list headed by West Indian Jason Holder (407 points). Ashwin’s spinning bowling partner Ravindra Jadeja held second with 403 points, followed by Ben Stokes (397) from England and Shakib Al Hasan (352) from Bangladesh.

Ashwin, 34, remained static in seventh place among test bowlers with 804 points, while pacemaker Jasprit Bumrah, who rested from the Chennai test, also retained his eighth place with 761 points with the pacemaker. Australian Pat Cummins (908) topping the list.

Kohli, who hit 0 and 62 in Chennai, retained fifth place among hitters with 838 points. Kane Williamson (919) of New Zealand retained the first position with Steve Smith (891) of Australia in second place.

Another Australian Marnus Labuschagne (878) climbed to third place, while England captain Joe Root (869) fell to fourth place after his two innings of 6 and 33 at the Chennai Test.

Another Cheteshwar Pujara Indian – 21st and 7th in Chennai – fell to eighth place with 727 points.
