Bengaluru Covid Cases Reaches 5000 Average in a day
While the city of Bengaluru reported nearly 5,000 new COVID-19 cases in the most recent 24-hour data, rivaling Delhi and accounting for around half that of Mumbai, the Karnataka government insisted on Thursday that it is ready to tackle the increased numbers.
The Minister of Health and Medical Education, Dr. K Sudhakar, who met with the municipal body of the city Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the district heads of Bengaluru Urban and Rural and other officials, announced a strategy to manage the increase at the level of the voting booths.
“We have more than 1.20 billion people (in Bengaluru). The density is too great. So we have a different strategy to contain the pandemic in Bengaluru. Therefore, we are establishing more than 8,500 working group committees. at the booth level, “he said. saying.
He said booth-level working group committees would be formed with healthcare workers, education and revenue officers, police and BBMP, as well as NGOs and wellness committees to ensure people’s participation.
He also said that the BBMP was instructed to perform 20 RT-PCR tests for each positive case reported. “More than 95 percent of all our tests have been RT PCR,” said the minister.
Dr. Sudhakar said there were enough beds in the city to cope with the increase in cases in the second wave.
“We have enough beds. Last year, thanks to the Covid situation, we increased our facilities by six times. We only had 5,000 oxygenated beds last year. Today we have 35,000 beds. In Bangalore alone, in the coming days, we will allocate 3,000 to 4,000 beds across all spectra, “he said.
The minister also dismissed concerns about a possible vaccine shortage, saying: “Why are you worried about vaccines? We have no shortage of vaccines. I have reiterated every day that we are receiving vaccines almost twice a week. Even now we have a stock of vaccines. 25 to 30 lakh doses. The union government has assured me that in a couple of days they will send another 25 lakh doses. The union’s health minister has categorically clarified that no state will run out of vaccines. ”
Bengaluru continues to account for the majority of cases in Karnataka, recording 4,991 cases out of the state’s 6,976 reported on Wednesday.
India reported a record 1,26,789 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday as several states struggled to contain a second spike in infections, complaining about vaccine shortages and demanding that vaccines be expanded to the very young.
Daily infections topped 100,000 for the first time on Monday and have now surpassed that mark three times, the largest daily increase in the world.
The rebound, much faster than the first wave last year, has taken authorities by surprise. The government blames the resurgence primarily on overcrowding and a reluctance to wear masks due to the reopening of shops and offices.
Vaccination centers in several states, including the worst-hit Maharashtra, have been closing early and turning people away as supplies run out. The state of Odisha said it had closed half of its vaccination sites.
