Centre put restrictions on Delhi govt’s proposal to hike salary of MLAs.
The Interior Ministry has “restricted” the Delhi government’s proposal to increase the salaries of community members. The government had made a proposal to increase salaries, putting it on par with other state legislatures.
In particular, a proposal to provide more salary and allowances for the Delhi MLAs has been pending with the MHA for the past five years.
In December 2015, the AAP government had passed a bill in the Delhi assembly that increased MLA emoluments to Rs 2.10 lakhs per month. The bill, however, was rendered ineffective as prior permission from the authorities involved was not taken before presenting it to the assembly.
The salary of the Delhi MLAs has not increased in the last 10 years. The Delhi government had asked the MHA for his salary and benefits to be on par with MLAs in other states. Currently, an MLA in Delhi earns 53,000 rupees a month. This includes 12,000 rupees as salary and the rest are allowances. In addition, they receive Rs 30,000 per month to pay two staff members they can hire.
Many states provide many other benefits and allowances to their MLAs such as house rent, office rent, staff, and vehicle allowances that Delhi MLAs do not get.
Meanwhile, the matter is likely to be taken up at the Delhi Cabinet meeting today.
