Amravati, February 15Alarmed by the increasing number of positive coronavirus cases in Maharashtra’s Amravati district since early February, the district administration imposed a night curfew but ruled out the possibility of imposing a new closure.

District collector Shailesh Naval told PTI on Monday that the spike in cases can be attributed to more people showing up for testing.

The Amravati district reported 449 new positive cases of coronavirus on Monday, bringing the count to 25,743.

“The curfew is aimed at controlling overcrowding in public and market places. It does not mean closing businesses or markets that will function as usual,” said the collector.

Naval said that the call for the operation of schools in the district must be taken up by the respective schools.

“In some schools, teachers and students have tested positive for coronavirus. We leave this decision to the school leadership,” he said.

Responding to a query, Naval said there is no possibility of imposing a blockade again on the district.

“The first blockade was imposed because there were no facilities. Now, we are equipped with all the facilities. There is no shortage of oxygen cylinders and ventilators in hospitals. Therefore, there is no possibility of another blockade,” he said.
