Defending champion Rafael Nadal will skip the US Open due to the coronavirus pandemic, putting on hold his attempt to match Roger Federer’s men’s record for Grand Slam titles.

Nadal explained his decision in a series of tweets sent in Spanish and English on Tuesday.

“The situation is very complicated around the world, COVID-19 cases are increasing, it seems that we still have no control,” wrote Nadal.

The 33-year-old Spaniard said participating in the tournament that will begin on August 31 in New York is “a decision I never wanted to make,” but added that “he would rather not travel.”

Current No. 1 woman Ash Barty had already announced that she would miss the US Open.
