A late goal from Aridane Santana helped Hyderabad FC draw 1-1 against SC East Bengal in Game 91 of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2020-21 at Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco on Friday. Bright Enobakhare gave SC East Bengal the lead in the second half before Santana regained parity in the final stages of the game. However, the result brought good news for ATK Mohun Bagan, who became the second team after Mumbai City FC to qualify for the semi-finals.
Hyderabad FC’s Joel Chianese forced Subrata Paul’s first save of the match in the 21st minute. The Australian forward was played by Lluis Sastre after overcoming the offside trap, but the SC East Bengal goalkeeper stepped out of line to save Chianese’s attempt.
In what was largely a quiet first half, the Kolkata club made their first attempt at goal in the 40th minute. Chinglensana Singh lost the ball to Ankit Mukherjee, and the full-back stormed into Hyderabad FC’s area before taking a shot that was stopped by Laxmikant Kattimani. Ankit’s header, which struck home, was then calmly picked up by the Hyderabad custodian.
In the 42nd minute, Anthony Pilkington brought out the best in Kattimani. The midfielder attempted a curling iron from the right side of the box and the effort required a stop with the tip of the goalkeeper’s finger to keep the score intact for half-time.
It was SC East Bengal who drew blood for the first time in the 59th minute. The goal came on the counterattack after a deflected shot from Santana hit the post and was cleared by Narayan Das. Pilkington headed the ball in the way of Enobakhare, who beat the Hyderabad defenders and shoved the ball into the net.
At the other end of the field, Akash Mishra nearly equalized two minutes after attempting a shot from afar, but Subrata saved it well. Hyderabad’s substitute Fran Sandaza thought he had tied the score in the 73rd minute, but the Spaniard was deemed offside.
In the 77th minute, Santana cleverly picked up a cross from Liston Colaco before attempting a first shot, but his effort was inches from target. Santana finally succeeded in second-half injury time after the Spaniard did well to make a pass from Sandaza from the right to restore parity between the two teams. With one point, Hyderabad edged FC Goa to third place in the league table, while a top four result for SC East Bengal was made even more difficult with the draw.
