Chanu, who recently won a bronze medal at the Asian Championships, setting the world record for the clean and shaken section in the process, said during an SAI-facilitated interaction on Thursday that he “ looked forward ” to traveling to the US. But she was concerned about the possibility of the tour being canceled due to the Covid-19 situation in India.

However, the MOC acted quickly and decided to send Chanu to the US on Saturday, before restrictions are placed on visitors from India. Chanu will be accompanied by her coaches Vijay Sharma and Sandeep Kumar. The weightlifter, who competes in the 49kg class, will spend the next 83 days preparing for the Olympics in St. Louis and will travel directly to Tokyo from there.

While there, Chanu will also be treated for her back and shoulder problems by physical therapist Aaron Horschig, who worked on her during her first visit last year. Chanu and Sharma credited Horschig with improving his fitness, which they said allowed him to set the world record for cleanliness and jerk.
