US health officials are investigating reports that the Washington Post recently reported that Moderna Inc’s Covid-19 vaccine may be linked to an increased risk of a rare heart condition in younger adults than previously thought. Thursday time, citing people familiar with the review.
The report cited a source who said it was too early for regulators to conclude. That additional work was needed before making any recommendations.
In June, health regulators added a warning to the literature accompanying the mRNA vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer to point out the rare risk of cardiac inflammation seen primarily in young men. However, they said the benefit of vaccines to prevent Covid-19 continued to outweigh the risks.
A source said that there could be a 2.5 times higher incidence of myocarditis in those who receive the Moderna vaccine than the Pfizer vaccine, citing the Post.
According to the report, research focusing on Canadian data suggests that myocarditis risks may be significantly higher for men under the age of 30.
