Omicron

On Friday, Karnataka Health Minister Sudhakar K said that data shows that the Delta
COVID-19 variant has decreased in prevalence and is now being replaced by an Omicron
variation of the disease.

This is in contrast to the second wave of the country, where the first variant was more
prevalent than other variants.

Sharing genome sequencing data until Friday in the country, the minister stated that
Omicron is the most prevalent variant.

The Omicron variant is the most prevalent in the third wave of COVID-19, with 67.5
percent of samples testing positive for the Omicron variant.

In contrast, however, the Delta variant, the most dominant in the second wave, with the
90.7 percent positivity rate is now less dominant with a 26 percent positive rate.

“Which strain is dominating in which wave in Karnataka? As per the genome sequencing
sample, the following are the dominant strains: Second wave: 90.7 percent Delta variant,
Third-wave: 67.5 per cent Omicron variant and 26 per cent Delta variant of coronavirus,”
Mr. Sudhakar tweeted.

In the meantime, Karnataka reported 31,198 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, with a
positive rate of 20.91 percent.
