Sachin Tendulkar donates Rs 1 crore to ‘Mission Oxygen’ for COVID patients.
Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday donated one million rupees to purchase oxygen concentrators for COVID-19 patients in the country as he battles a severe second wave of the global pandemic.
India is witnessing an unprecedented increase in COVID-19 infections and recorded a single-day increase of 3,79,257 new cases on Wednesday.
The healthcare system is crumbling due to the crisis with hospitals struggling to provide oxygen and crucial drugs to infected patients.
“Your donation of Rs 1 crore to ‘Mission Oxygen’ in their effort to acquire and provide life-saving oxygen concentrators to hospitals across the country at this time of need is incredibly comforting,” a statement from Mission Oxygen reads, which is a fundraising initiative of entrepreneurs based in Delhi-NCR to import oxygen concentrating machines and donate them to needy hospitals.
The 48-year-old from Mumbai, who had spent some time in hospital after testing positive for the dreaded infection last month, also took to Twitter to praise the initiative.
“The second wave of COVID has put our healthcare system under immense pressure. Providing oxygen to a large number of critically ill COVID patients is the need of the moment, ”Tendulkar wrote on his Twitter account.

“It is encouraging to see how people rise to the occasion. A group of more than 250 young entrepreneurs has launched Mission Oxygen to raise funds to import oxygen concentrators and donate them to hospitals across the country.
“I have helped by contributing to the cause and I hope that your effort will soon reach many more hospitals across India. Today, we have to unite behind all those who are working hard to combat this pandemic. ”
Tendulkar has also committed to donating plasma once he is eligible.
The IPL Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals franchises also contributed Rs 7.5 crore and 1.5 crores respectively to the fight against the pandemic.
A few days ago, the pacemaker for the Knight Riders of Australia and Kolkata, Pat Cummins, had donated $ 50,000 to buy oxygen supplies for hospitals in India.
