Congress president Sonia Gandhi has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the new Covid 19 vaccine policy. He has described the government’s policy as arbitrary and discriminatory.
Urging the Prime Minister to intervene immediately to reverse it, he said the new vaccine policy implies that the central government has abdicated its responsibility to provide free vaccine to all indigenous people between the ages of 18 and 45.
“It is surprising that despite the harsh lessons of the past year and the pain inflicted on our citizens, the government continues to pursue an arbitrary and discriminatory policy, which promises to exacerbate existing challenges,” he said in his letter.
“The policy implies that the government of India has abdicated its responsibility to provide free vaccination to citizens between the age group of 18 and 45 years. This is a total abandonment of the responsibility of the government towards our youth,” he said.
Noting that any reasonable person will agree to the benefit of a uniform price for vaccination, he urged Prime Minister Modi to intervene immediately and “reverse this reckless decision.”
The Center announced a liberalized vaccination policy on Monday, making all adults 18 and older eligible to get vaccinated starting May 1.
The Serum Institute of India announced on Wednesday a price of Rs 400 per dose for its COVID-19 ‘Covishield’ vaccine for state governments and Rs 600 per dose for private hospitals.
