Chennai: Australia captain Steve Smith was chosen on Wednesday by Delhi Capitals at the 2021 IPL auction in Chennai today for Rs 2.2 crore. RCB and Delhi Capitals showed interest in Smith and in the end Delhi picked up the former captain of Australia. Previously, Smith was released by the Rajasthan Royals. Karun Nair, which had its base price as Rs 50 lakh, found no buyers and did not sell early enough in the auction. English batsmen Alex Hales and Jason Roy, who had their base price as Rs 1.5 crore and Rs 2 crore respectively, also found no buyers and also did not sell. West Indies batsman Evin Lewis and Australian limited skipper Aaron Finch it was also not sold at auction. However, just on the eve of the auction, England pacemaker Wood decided to withdraw his name to spend time with his family, ESPNcricinfo reported.
12 players are on the auction list with a base price of Rs 1.5 crore. Hanuma Vihari and Umesh Yadav are the two Indian players on the list of 11 cricketers with a base price of Rs 1 crore.
Delhi Capitals previously retained 19 players, including six foreign stars, while six players, including Alex Carey, Jason Roy and Sandeep Lamichhane, were released from the team for the 2021 edition of the IPL. Players who were retained by the franchise from last season include Indian internationals Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin, along with Lalit Yadav, Pravin Dubey, and Avesh Khan.
Delhi Capitals also had retained six foreign players They include last season’s Purple Cap winner Kagiso Rabada, along with fellow South African pacemaker Anrich Nortje, Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, West Indies batsman Shimron Hetmyer and English bowler Chris Woakes.
