- It has been something very controversial, the decision of this referee: Gavaskar
Big hitter Sunil Gavaskar believes Joe Root should have come out if the referral was made to the TV referee and the ball was cutting through the stumps on Day 3 of the second Test between India and England.
Joe Root was caught up front in the penultimate over of the day by Axar Patel and India initially appealed for caught behind. Goalkeeper Rishabh Pant was confident, but outfield referee Nitin Menon was unfazed. After a long discussion, India went to the review.
The third referee was for tracking the ball and although the impact was right in front of the stumps, the decision was not eliminated as the ball had landed outside the area and the initial decision was not eliminated.
“Yes, that is something the ICC will have to consider sooner rather than later. It has been something very controversial, this referee’s decision. Particularly when it comes to LBW, if the ball is going to hit the stumps, if it is part of the ball or all of it, the bails are going to trip, it has seldom happened that the bails stay there. So if the referral is made to the TV referee and if the ball is cutting the stumps, then I think, in my opinion It should be disclosed. Otherwise there is no point going to the TV referee, “Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.
“Having said that, there is also the other point of view where if you start giving your all, the matches will end sooner rather than later because if you really look at the way the ball hits or cuts the stumps, it happens almost 9 out of 10 So therefore that’s another thing to look at. Surely the ICC will take up the matter and the Cricket Committee will find a solution, “added Gavaskar.
