Ravichandran Ashwin, speaking about the second test in Chennai, where his efforts overall helped India achieve a series-level victory, revealed that the crowd at the stadium had asked Englishman Moeen Ali about ‘Valimai’. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin recalled laughing that Moeen had confusedly asked him what ‘Valimai’ meant.

Checking for updates on ‘Valimai’, starring popular actor Ajith Kumar, has become a running joke in Tamil Nadu. The movie has been in the works for a few years.

Ashwin said: “There was an amazing and funny moment that showed how passionate or crazy Tamil Nadu people are about movies. I was on the dividing line, and suddenly a guy yelled ‘Ashwin, Ashwin, Ashwin’. I turned around and asked him ‘what’, and he replied, ‘Valimai update?’

“I was totally drunk, I didn’t understand what was happening. Later in the day I googled it. The next day, Moeen Ali came up and asked ‘What is Valimai?’ It meant that they had also asked Moeen Ali for a Valimai update when he had been on the edge! Asking a player from England for the Valimai update was great, I can’t get it out of my head (laughs)! “

Ashwin also spoke about how the Chennai crowd was a vital element in India’s victory. He described how the 11th hitter, Mohammad Siraj, was inspired by the way the crowd cheered on his defensive punches as Ashwin approached his century in the second inning.

He said: “Another moment I enjoyed was the cheering crowd whenever Mohammed Siraj defended when I was hitting in the nineties. He came up to me and said ‘not even my father has applauded so much for my defense, there are so many people cheering for me now, surely you will get your 100 and I will play until then’.

Ashwin also said that the spirit of Chennai seeped into the Indian locker room.

“I noticed that Kohli and Rishabh Pant encouraged me in Tamil by saying ‘level vera’ (different level). I think Virat would have picked it up from Murali Vijay, who used to do it when he was on the team, ”he said.
