French tennis pro-Alize Cornet wowed fans both at and off-court.
After overcoming the world’s former no, she made it to her first Grand Slam quarterfinals 1.
Simona Halep in an intense fourth-round women’s singles matches at the Australian Open at the Rod Laver Arena.
The world’s no. 61 fought back over Halep, a twice-world Grand Slam champion, to win 7-6, 3-6, 4-4, and record her first win against Halep.
Cornet also gave the fans who gathered at Melbourne Park another reason to satisfy her.
After winning, Cornet paid an emotional tribute to her former teammate Jelena Dokic following an interview.
The former Croatian star’s career was marred by injuries that forced her to make her early retirement from competitive sports at 30 years old in 2014.
Cornet, a part of off-court and on-court moments with Dokic congratulated the former player of 38 years on his remarkable career.
An identical video was posted on behalf of the Australian Open on their official Twitter account.
“So, I just want to thank my box first,” Cornet stated.
“But also, I want to tell you [Dokic] something.
How you moved on in your life, I think we can all congratulate you.
Because you were a fantastic player, and now you are a tremendous commentator,” Cornet said.
The crowd of Rod Laver Arena stood on their feet to applaud the gesture as they hugged.
Dokic, who was emotionally tense, expressed gratitude to Cornet for her lovely words.
“You just made me cry; I can’t believe I’m crying – thank you,” she told her audience.
Cornet will now play American Danielle Collins for a place in the final four matches of the Australian Open. Australian Open on Wednesday.
