Maharashtra’s chief minister on Tuesday announced strict measures similar to a lockdown aimed at breaking the chain of infection, noting that COVID-19 cases in the state are exploding at a dangerous rate. There will be a 15-day ‘crown curfew’ and only essential services will be allowed in the state.

As Maharashtra reported 60,212 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, CM Uddhav Thackeray, in his virtual address to the state, said that public transportation would be available only to those involved in essential services during the 15-day ‘janta curfew’ since Wednesday.

Section 144 will also be enforced throughout Maharashtra starting tomorrow, which means that no one will be able to venture out without a valid reason. All public places will also be closed for fifteen days.

Describing the coronavirus situation in the state, CM Thackeray said that he has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to allow oxygen sourcing from other states. He said that the Maharashtra health system was under great pressure.

Uddhav Thackeray said he would also ask the prime minister to accept the Air Force, the Army’s help in addressing oxygen and drug shortages in the state.

“Hospitals across the state are under tremendous pressure. The healthcare system is overloaded. The current situation is terrifying,” said Uddav Thackeray.

Earlier, when addressing an all-party meeting, CM Uddhav Thackeray had hinted at imposing a prolonged lockdown on the state to curb the increase in cases. On Sunday, he held a meeting with members of the state COVID-19 task force and said that a standard operating procedure (SoP) will be prepared after consultation.
