162,572 COVID-19 new cases reported in the UK.
London: England had a record-breaking daily total of 162,572 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, January 1, 2021, up from 160,276 yesterday.
Daily updates also revealed that 154 people died in England from the virus within 28 days after a positive test. This is down from Friday’s 178 deaths.
Usually, the data also includes Scotland and Wales.
Still, Saturday’s report did not include them due to differences in reporting schedules during the New Year weekend.
In December, the daily count of confirmed infections in the United Kingdom broke all records. This was due to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.
However, hospitalizations and deaths are still lower than in previous waves.
Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all have restrictions like nightclub closings, social distancing rules for pubs, and limits on how many people can gather.
England, which has more than 80% of the UK’s population, has not imposed any restrictions. Sajid Javid, Health Secretary, said that any new rules would only be implemented as an “absolute last resort.”
