A fire at a chemical company in the Pune district left up to 18 workers dead and a dozen missing on Monday, according to reports.

The massive fire broke out earlier today at a plant managed by SVS Aqua Technologies in the Pirangut MIDC area in Mulshi tehsil, authorities said, adding that six fire tenders have been deployed in the area to put out the flames.

According to NDTV, 37 employees were working inside the unit when the fire broke out.

“According to company officials, at least 17 of their workers were missing after the fire broke out. So far we have recovered five bodies and a search is underway for the other employees,” said Devendra Potphode, fire chief for PMRDA Fire. Services.

He said the company is engaged in the manufacture, supply, and export of chemicals for the treatment of surfaces, water, and air.
