Srinagar, Feb 14: Jammu and Kashmir Police thwarted a major tragedy on Sunday with the timely detection of a seven kg improvised explosive device (IED) near the busy general bus stop area in the city of Jammu.

The incident comes exactly two years after a terrorist attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy in Pulwama, southern Kashmir, killed 40 security personnel.

Addressing a press conference, Jammu Police Inspector General (IG) Mukesh Singh said: “We were on high alert because we had input that terrorist groups were planning an attack on the anniversary of the Pulwama attack. Last night we arrested a person named Sohail and we recovered 6-6.5 to 7 kg of IED from his possession. “

“Sohail revealed during the investigation that he studies in Chandigarh and received a message from Al Badr Tanzeem from Pakistan to place IED here,” he said.

“Sohail was given three or four places to place the improvised explosive device, after which he was supposed to take a flight to Srinagar, where he would have been received by an Al Badr Tanzeem ground worker named Athar Shakeel Khan,” he added.

In more detail about the attack, the policeman said that “a person named Qazi Waseem in Chandigarh was also aware of this matter, he has been detained. We have also arrested a person named Abid Nabi.”
