3 LeT militants killed in a gunfight in Anantnag.
Three militants were killed in a shooting in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir on Saturday, police said.
A joint team of J&K Police, Army, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a cordon and search operation in Kawarigam village in Anantnag after specific input on the presence of militants in the village, they said. As the joint team focused on the target, the militants opened fire. The forces returned fire, leading to a shootout.
Police said the trapped militants were asked to surrender, but they refused. “They (militants) fired indiscriminately at the joint search group that was taken in retaliation, prompting an encounter,” police said. “In the ensuing encounter, three terrorists from the outlaw LeT terrorist team was killed and their bodies recovered from the meeting site.”
The police identified the militants as Arif Hajam, a resident of Sadoora, Basit Rashid Ganai of Audsoo Achabal, and Suhail Mushtaq Bhat of Karimabad Pulwama.
Police said Arif was the Lashkar district commander and was active for nearly three years, and that Basit joined the militant ranks in April this year.
Police said the militants were part of a group “involved in various cases of terrorist crimes, including attacks on security forces and civil atrocities.”
“IGP Kashmir has congratulated the police and security forces for the great success and conducting a successful operation in a professional manner without any collateral damage,” the police said in a statement.
