New Chief Of ISRO: Professor. S Somanath, an Indian aerospace engineer and rocket scientist, was appointed the new chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). 

He will replace Kailasavadivoo Sivan, who will end his term on Friday.

  1. On Wednesday, the Center has announced the appointment of Dr. S. Somanath as the Secretary of the Department of Space and the Chairperson of the Space Commission. His work runs for a full term of three years beginning from the date of his entry into the position, including an extension of his time throughout retirement for a public interest, a Personnel Ministry order said.
  2. Mr. Somanath has expertise in various fields, including designing launch vehicles. He is a specialist in launch vehicle system engineering structural design and structural dynamics, design and procedure for integration mechanisms design, and the use of pyrotechnics.
  3. He is the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC) located in Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram. At the beginning of his work, he was the team director of the Integration of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
  4. He is Mr. Somanath, born in July 1963, graduated from mechanical engineering in 1963 from Kerala University, with the second position in the university. He then completed his Post Graduation with a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, with a Gold Medal for his meritorious accomplishments.
  5. He was awarded the Space Gold Medal from the Astronautical Society of India (ASI) Performance Excellence Award-2014 and the Team Excellence Award for 2014 GSLV Mk-III realization from ISRO.
