Junagadh Zoo: Another female wolf produced five pups on the 18th of November. Of the 14, 10 puppies have been delivered within 18 days.
On Monday, five puppies of Indian grey wolves were born in the Sakkarbaug Zoo in Gujarat’s Junagadh, bringing the number of wolves living in the Zoo up to 50.
The birth took place three weeks following another animal that also had five puppies in the Zoo.
“Five pups are born at Sakkarbaug Zoo, JunagNow, now we have a healthy stock of 50 Indian grey wolves.
The Sakkarbaug Zoo team is taking care of the newborn,” Dushyant Vasavada, the chief conservator of forest (CCF), Junagadh wildlife circle, said.
In 1863, Sakkarbaug Zoo was one of the oldest zoos across the nation. The central Zoo in the conservation breeding program for Indian grey wolves was initiated in CZA Central Zoo Authority (CZA) in 2016-17.
According to data provided by the Zoo, 40 wolf pups were born in the Zoo as of 2016-17, as part of the breeding program for conservation. Three babies each in the years 2016-17 and 2017-18. Two in 2018-19, fourteen in 2019-20, seven in 2020-21, and 11 in the first eleven days of this year.
Another female wolf was pregnant with five pups on the 18th of November; out of fourteen pubs born in 2014, 10 puppies were delivered within 18 days.
“In the total stock of 50, ten animals were either rescued, treated, bred, and came to the Sakkarbaug zoo as part of the blood program with other zoos such as Jaipur and Mysore Zoo.
Thirty-two births have been reported in the last two-and-a-half years. Scientific animal husbandry and breeding practices have contributed most to success,” Abhishekh Kumar, Director of Sakkarbaug Zoo, told the Zoo.
A Sakkarbaug Zoo is also the Zoo that coordinates the breeding of Gir Lions, Indian wild ass, and four-horned Antelope. In addition, five lion cubs and five stripe hyena cubs were born at the Zoo in the last month.
