6 New York prisons to close in March.

ALBANY, NY – Six New York State correctional facilities will close next March in a cost-saving measure amid declining inmate populations, authorities said.

More than 1,700 people work at the six facilities in upstate New York and there are more than 1,400 inmates. Prisoners will be sent to other locations and no dismissals are expected.

The state Department of Corrections and Community Oversight said it will work with unions to provide transfer opportunities for facilities staff.

Facilities scheduled for closure on March 10 are the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility, the Moriah Shock Correctional Facility, the Willard Drug Treatment Campus, the Southport Correctional Facility, the Downstate Correctional Facility, and the Downstate Correctional Facility. Rochester Correctional Facility.
