7 Indian Women Hockey Players Tested COVID-19 Positive including Captain Rani Rampal.
Seven members of the Indian women’s hockey team, including Captain Rani Rampal, and two support staff members tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday before a training camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Center in Bangalore. All players and support staff are asymptomatic and have been placed under observation at the SAI center.
“They were tested on April 24, after quarantine after their return from their respective home cities to their training base at the Bengaluru SAI, as per established protocol,” the SAI said in a statement.
Besides Rampal, the others who have been infected are Savita Punia, Sharmila Devi, Rajani, Navjot Kaur, Navneet Kaur, and Sushila.
The two support staff members who tested positive are video analyst Amrutaprakash and science advisor Wayne Lombard.
The Indian women’s hockey core group had returned to the national camp in Bengaluru last Sunday to restart preparations for the Tokyo Olympics after a 10-day break.
The 25-member Olympic core group underwent mandatory quarantine before the start of training.
In January, the team toured Argentina where they played seven games.
The team drew two games against the host country’s junior team, lost the next two against Argentina’s B team, and then suffered losses in both games against the world’s number two senior team.
