Bangladesh fast pitcher Abu Jayed tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of his tour of Sri Lanka, the country’s cricket board (BCB) said on Wednesday.
“Pace bowler Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi has reported positive for COVID-19. He will receive isolated treatment for COVID according to the guidelines and will undergo further testing in due course, ”said BCB physician Debashis Chowdhury in a statement.
The Board said Jayed is the only one out of 27 cricketers who have been tested for the contagious disease to have tested positive.
“Samples were collected from 27 cricketers called up for the Bangladesh Team Skill Camp and the test results were 26 negative,” said BCB.
Jayed has appeared in nine tests for Bangladesh, taking 24 wickets, and is a vital member of the Bangladesh touring team that is scheduled to play a series of three tests in Sri Lanka starting October 23, subject to an agreement on the amount. days that the visitor team must remain in quarantine.
Starter Saif Hassan also tested positive for COVID-19 on September 9 but has since recovered.
Bangladesh was supposed to go on a tour of Sri Lanka in July-August, but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The two boards are currently negotiating the reduction of the 14-day quarantine period for tourists.
According to the current schedule, Bangladesh will travel to Sri Lanka on September 27 and the first test will start on October 23.
