CalcuttaBengali cinema icon Prosenjit Chatterjee put down rumors that he would be joining BJP, while his industry colleague Yash Dasgupta and several other actors joined the saffron field ahead of the West Bengal assembly vote.
Chatterjee said he wants to stay focused on his acting career.
Speculation that Chatterjee could be joining BJP has abounded in recent days after BJP senior leader Anirban Ganguly went to meet the nationally award-winning actor and handed him a copy of a book ‘Amit Shah and the March of BJP ‘written by him.
The BJP had called the meeting between Chatterjee and Ganguly “interesting and revealing.”
Chatterjee said in a tweet: “As a Bengali, it is in our culture to greet and welcome our guests. I have hosted many in the past and from various industries and professions. I love and respect their views, but at the same time , I have my own. “
He continued: “There is no political slant or agenda other than meeting and saying hi to Dr. Ganguly. I stay focused on what I do best: acting.”
The BJP declined to comment.
Meanwhile, Dasgupta along with some other actors from the Bengali film industry joined the saffron camp for the day.
He is considered a close friend of TMC MP and actor Nusrat Jahan.
Dasgupta was received in the saffron field by BJP National Secretary General Kailash Vijayvargiya, Party National Vice President Mukul Roy, and Party MP Swapan Dasgupta.
“BJP has always provided opportunities for young people. We all have to work for change for the better,” Dasgupta said at a press meeting held on the occasion.
“Today that I joined the BJP does not mean that I will start saying bad things about Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. I had informed her of my decision and sought her blessing before joining the saffron camp,” he said.
More young people should join politics for the good of the country, said Dasgupta, who has acted in films such as’Total Dadgiri‘,’Fidaa‘,’Mon Jaane Na‘.
Papia Adhikari, Soumili Ghosh Biswas, and Tramila Bhattacharya are among others who joined BJP.
Since TMC came to power in 2011, Tollygunge’s film industry had reached out to him with prominent actors, directors and producers who rubbed shoulders with their leaders and attended various party shows.
But when BJP emerged as a major rival after winning 18 of Lok Sabha’s 42 seats in the state, the Bengali film industry witnessed winds of change with various actors and actresses joining the saffron field in the past two years. .
