After Cyclone Tauktae, PM Modi reaches Gujarat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Bhavnagar in Gujarat on Wednesday to review the situation in the state after Cyclone Tauktae.

Modi landed in Bhavnagar from Delhi and proceeded to conduct aerial reconnaissance of Una, Diu, Jafarabad, and Mahuva, an official said.

After the poll, the prime minister is scheduled to hold a review meeting in Ahmedabad.

Thirteen people were killed in Gujarat when Cyclone Tauktae struck parts of the state and left a trail of destruction along the coast, uprooting power poles, trees and damaging thousands of houses and roads.

In what was one of the worst cyclones the state faced, Tauktae brought heavy rains in many parts along its way from the coast of Saurashtra to northern Gujarat, with 46 talukas receiving more than 100mm of downpour, while 12 of them registered 150mm to 175mm. of rains.

Tauktae, characterized as an extremely severe cyclonic storm on Monday, has now weakened into a depression and focused on southern Rajasthan and the contiguous Gujarat region on Wednesday morning, the Indian Meteorological Department said.

More than 16,000 houses were damaged, more than 40,000 trees and more than 70,000 power poles uprooted, while 5,951 villages faced a total blackout due to the cyclonic storm in Gujarat, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said.
