A 50-year-old man, who was arrested and taken to the Vejalpur Police Station in Ahmedabad in a gambling case, died on Sunday morning, leading family members to allege that he died because he was not provided with his daily medication. despite being a cancer patient.
The deceased identified as Abdul Kadir Shaikh (50), a resident of Vejalpur in Ahmedabad, was detained by the Gujarat Police State Monitoring Cell for gambling on Saturday night and taken to the Vejalpur police station. Shaikh, who ran the cookie business from home, suffered from laryngeal cancer (laryngeal cancer) and was detained at Vejalpur Police Station after his Covid-19 test at 9 pm on Saturday.
On Sunday morning around 11 a.m., the police informed Shaikh’s family that he had died inside the police jail under mysterious circumstances. The body has been sent for autopsy and a case of accidental death has been recorded in the matter.
The family alleged that they were denied access to cancer drugs despite the fact that the former arrived at the police station three times between 9:00 p.m. on Saturday and 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
“My uncle had to take sets of drugs at least 5-6 times a day for his cancer. After learning that he was detained, we arrived at the police station around 9:30 pm with medicine and food, but we were not allowed to meet him. Then his wife tried to get her medications at 3 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Sunday but was not allowed once more. At 11 in the morning, we were told that he had died. We have not found any wound marks on his body and we are awaiting the PM’s report, ”said Hussain Patel, the deceased’s nephew.
Speaking to The Indian Express, LD Odedara, Police Inspector and Officer in Charge of the Vejalpur Police Station, said: “Shaikh was taken away in connection with a gambling case and detained after his Covid-19 test. . CCTV footage from the dungeon where he was locked up clearly shows that around 8:30 am on Sunday, he had breakfast and then went to sleep. Then, around 10 a.m., another inmate from the dungeon tried to wake him up but there was no response. Then we called the 108 ambulance helpline and a team arrived at the police station. Shaikh was declared dead by the 108 medical teams and then his body was sent to the Civil Hospital. ”
