An 11-year-old girl is the only survivor of a Michigan plane crash that killed four adults on Saturday, according to police. Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Lt. William Church said the victims were aboard a twin-engine light aircraft when it crashed near Beaver.
Island, located at the northern end of Lake Michigan, about 40 miles northwest of the town of Charlevoix.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the Britton-Norman BN2P plane crashed around 2:30 p.m. ET. ) was conducting a training flight in the area and responded after receiving an alert from the emergency locator transmitter alerting them of the accident.
“Members of the helicopter crew landed and offered assistance and were able to hoist and transport an 11-year-old girl and a grown man to McLaren Hospital in Petoskey, MI,” the tweet reads.
The girl underwent chest compressions in the helicopter on the way to the hospital and the man was later pronounced. Sheriff Church identified the accident victims as Kate Leese and Adam Kendall, both new to Beaver Island, Mike Perdue of Gaylord, his anonymous 11-year-old daughter and a pilot whose name authorities have not released at this time.
Two dogs were also killed in the accident, authorities said. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the accident, the FAA said.
