Argentina Request FIFA's Decision to Replay World Cup Qualifier Against Brazil

Argentina Request FIFA’s Decision to Replay World Cup Qualifier Against Brazil.

BUENOS AIRES: The Argentine Football Association (AFA) will appeal to FIFA’s decision to make Brazil and Argentina rerun their World Cup qualifier.

After five minutes, it was called off due to a COVID-19 quarantine rule violation.

According to an official with the association, Argentina will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

On Argentine television, Andres Urich, an advisor to the organization, said, “We believe the decision is unfair, and we believe Argentina did not cause the game to be canceled.”

“We believe we are in the right, and we believe we must go to court.”

Earlier today, Argentine media reported on a letter from FIFA purporting to force the two clubs to reschedule the game for September 22.

The original match was canceled in September 2021 when four Argentine players were accused of lying to Brazilian health officials about their COVID-19 status.

Officials said the Argentines had broken rules that stated that visitors who had spent the previous two weeks in the United Kingdom, South Africa, or India were not allowed to enter Brazil unless they were citizens or had permanent residency.

According to Brazilian officials, the players deceived border officials by claiming they had not visited a red-list nation in the 14 days leading up to the game.

According to Argentine officials, the same standards used in the Copa America in Brazil in June last year were in place for the World Cup qualifiers to allow teams to travel across the continent.

The South American Football Confederation confirmed that interpretation.

On the other hand, FIFA has suspended the four players for two matches and has stated that they want the game to be played.

Argentina challenged the judgment two months ago but has yet to receive a response, criticizing Friday’s action as premature.

“It’s hasty because it doesn’t respond to the first appeal,” Urich said. “It’s confirmed that there is another instance, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and the AFA will appeal.”

The outcome of the encounter between South America’s two footballing titans has no bearing on World Cup qualifying because both teams have already qualified for Qatar.
