Army to finally wind down its cattle farms
New Delhi, March 30: More than three years after the Defense Ministry approved a proposal to close 39 military cattle farms across the country, the military is finally dissolving them, official sources said Tuesday.
A flag ceremony will be held at the Delhi cantonment on Wednesday, marking the closure of the farms, they said. In August 2017, the Defense Ministry had announced a series of reform measures for the Indian army that included the closure of military farms, which house around 25,000 head of cattle.
These farms occupied around 20,000 acres of defense land across the country and the army spent around Rs 300 million a year to maintain them. The farms were established by the British to guarantee the supply of milk to the army units.
The Army has decided to “transfer” all livestock kept on farms to government departments or dairy cooperatives at nominal cost.
