Around 90 short earthquakes hit Portugal’s Azores island.

LISBON, Portugal: Authorities in Portugal’s Azores archipelago have issued an alarm after almost 90 minor earthquakes struck the mid-Atlantic volcanic island of Sao Jorge in less than 24 hours, though no damage has been reported.

The Urzelina volcano in Sao Jorge last erupted in 1808. The Azores Civil Protection administration has asked experts from the region’s volcanic surveillance center to assess the situation.

In a statement, Civil Protection said it had already contacted local mayors and fire departments, urging them to “stay watchful” and assist the inhabitants of Sao Jorge if necessary.

According to the authority, the seismic activity began on Saturday afternoon, which urged residents to remain calm, stay informed, and follow experts’ instructions.

The magnitudes of the earthquakes varied from 1.9 to 3.3.

Sao Jorge is one of the Azores’ nine islands, with roughly 8,200 people. It is part of the archipelago’s middle group, which also includes the major tourist attractions of Faial and Pico, both of which are volcanic.
