Biden may visit Europe to discuss Putin’s attack with other NATO leaders.
Next week, US President Joe Biden will travel to Europe for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine. He will meet with other NATO leaders to discuss the crisis. The White House announced on Tuesday (March 15, 2022).
According to the White House, Biden will go to Brussels, Belgium, on March 24 to attend an “extraordinary NATO meeting” to address continued deterrence and defense operations in response to Russia’s “unprovoked and unlawful” aggression on Ukraine.
He’ll also attend a European Council meeting to discuss the United States shared concerns about Ukraine, including transatlantic efforts to impose economic penalties on Russia, give humanitarian aid to people affected by the bloodshed, and address other issues related to the war.
The huge event comes as the United Nations reports that over 3 million people have fled Ukraine, with over 1.8 million coming in Poland.
President Vladimir Putin describes Russia’s efforts as a “special military operation” to demilitarise and “denazify” Ukraine.
On the other hand, Moscow has been unable to seize any of the country’s ten largest cities since its entry began on February 24, the greatest assault on a European state since 1945.
Meanwhile, video-conference discussions between Russia and Ukraine resumed on Tuesday.
Ukrainian officials expressed optimism that the war may finish sooner than expected and suggested that Moscow accept its failure to establish a new administration by force.
Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, said it was too early to anticipate progress in the discussions.
“The work is arduous, and the fact that (the negotiations) are continuing is probably encouraging in the current situation,” he said.
