Biden promises Emir he’ll create Qatar as the largest non-NATO partner. 

WASHINGTON: U.S. President Joe Biden promised Qatar’s emir Sheik Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Monday: that he would shortly designate Qatar as a crucial non-NATO ally conferring special status to an essential partner in a volatile region.

At a conference in the Oval Office, Biden said that he would inform his U.S. Congress soon of the designation granted to Biden by the United States to close allies of non-NATO that have strategic relations in the military of the U.S. military.

“Qatar is a trustworthy friend, reliable partner. So I’m also notifying Congress that I will declare Qatar as a crucial non-NATO partner to highlight that our friendship is important. 

It’s long overdue, I believe,” Biden told reporters while the Emir sat next to him.

Qatar is the world’s biggest supplier of natural gas liquefied and is likely to shift the gas supply to Europe if the Ukraine conflict disrupts Russian gas delivery to Europe.

The plan of Biden’s for the Oval Office also included the Iran nuclear talks and relations with Afghanistan, where the tiny Gulf country now represents the interests of Washington.

Tamim was also able to meet separately with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and discuss arms sales and other issues about the military along with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, an official said to reporters.

Biden claimed that he and Emir had lots in common on Monday, including strengthening investment and commercial collaboration.

He was pleased with a new agreement with Boeing Qatar Airways Group signed with Boeing that, he claims, will result in “tens of thousands of well-paying jobs.’

Boeing Co received a launch request by Qatar Airways for a new freighter version of its 777X passenger aircraft and a preliminary order for 737 MAX aircraft at the Washington event on Monday. 

Biden declared that Biden said that the United Arab Emirates defeated a ballistic missile attack from the Houthis in Yemen in the early hours of Sunday. “We’ve been in daily contact with UAE to address those threats,” Biden stated.

He stated that he had instructed his Pentagon’s Austin to do all possible to convey the backing from the United States for the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and throughout the Gulf region.
