THE SUPREME Court has issued a notification to Chief Elections Commissioner Sunil Arora and political party leaders of a contempt statement alleging lapses in the release of criminal records of candidates who participated in the Bihar assembly elections last year .
A court of Justices RF Nariman, Hemant Gupta and BR Gavai issued a notice on the statement of attorney Brajesh Singh, who held that the defendants were in “willful disobedience” of the court’s instructions in a February 2020 order regarding said publication.
In addition to CEC Arora, notices were sent to Bihar Electoral Director HR Srinivas, JD (U) leader KC Tyagi, Jagdanand Singh from RJD, Abdul Khalik from LJP, RS Surjewala from Congress and BL Santosh from BJP.
The order required political parties to upload details of criminal cases against candidates presented in the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls on their websites, in addition to a local vernacular newspaper and a national newspaper and social media accounts.
