Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party (SP), encouraged people on Tuesday to fly the national flag from their homes from August 9 to 15 while accusing the BJP of acting as if it respects the tricolor.
Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, had already declared an “Independence Week” with the theme “Har Ghar Tiranga” from August 11–17. In a local message, Mr. Yadav urged the people to fly the flag a week before Independence Day and questioned the BJP’s patriotism.
Yadav said, “People who played no part in the nation’s independence fight are working in the name of patriotism. What regard would they have for the martyrs if they had no connection to the independence movement?” The national flag has never been respected by the BJP or its parent organization, the RSS, according to Mr. Yadav.

“Why wasn’t the national flag raised from the Sangh headquarters in Nagpur? The BJP and RSS are working to confuse the populace, “added he.
In the week before Independence Day, Mr. Yadav said, people should remember the liberation cause and pay respects to the martyrs, the Indian Constitution, and the democratic system.
According to Mr. Yadav, August 9 was a momentous day since it marked the beginning of Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India agitation in 1942.
He said that “August Kranti’s” ambition was to create the rule of farmers, laborers, and young people in the nation so everyone could live with rights and dignity.
He said that ordinary people and “socialists” were again responsible for realizing this objective and defending and re-establishing the constitutional principles and aspirations of the national struggle.
The SP leader said that because of his party’s well-known support for democracy and the Constitution, it was unacceptable for the “power-hungry” to appropriate the national flag.
Meanwhile, work was underway to give the BJP’s “Har Ghar Tiranga” celebration a spectacular appearance.
