OUAGADOUGOU – A Burkina Faso military court opened the trial of 14 people. It includes former President Blaise Compaore, for the assassination of influential leftist leader Thomas Sankara, who was ousted as president by Compaore in a coup. in 1987.
According to military documents seen by The Associated Press, Compaore is charged with complicity, undermining state security, and concealing bodies.
He is being tried in absentia from Côte d’Ivoire, where he has been in exile since he was ousted in 2014.
Côte d’Ivoire has refused to extradite Compaore. The trial is seen as an important step in determining the circumstances surrounding Sankara’s death, which has been kept secret for nearly 35 years.
