Arvind Kejriwal's Delhi Budget

NCPCR, a group that fights for children’s rights, wants to know why the Delhi government didn’t tell them about the problem of children running away from child care centers in the national capital.

Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, told a press conference on Saturday that Rs 10 million has been set aside for street children and that a state-of-the-art school will be built. They will get all the facilities there.

Mr. Kejriwal also said that until now, children had been “grabbed” and put in childcare homes, where they were not taken care of properly, which made them run away.

Priyank Kanoongo, the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights chair, said the group had met four times a month with all the states and territories. The Delhi government didn’t raise the issue of children running away from childcare homes.

“The NCPCR wants to know why you didn’t tell us about this very important issue of children running away from child care institutions in Delhi at the NCPCR’s monthly review meetings with all states and UTs,” said Mr. Kanoongo.

The commission also asked for a report on the poor condition of child care facilities in Delhi and on the people who didn’t follow the rules of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and its rules that were put in place in 2016.

It also wanted to know how many “children in street situations” were rescued in the last six months, how many children were rescued from the streets and placed in child care institutions, and how many children ran away from child care institutions during the same period.

The commission also asked the Delhi government for information about the children, their homes, the dates they ran away, copies of the FIRs that were filed in each case, and the number of registered child care institutions in Delhi and their information.

As a part of this, a report on inspections by the JJ Act’s 2015 inspection committee and the CWC was also asked for.
