Coastal Fire Near Laguna Beach Destroyed Around Dozen Homes. 

Laguna Niguel Fire: Local officials reported a wildfire in a residential neighborhood of California damaged over a dozen houses on Wednesday evening. 

The Coastal Fire, which started in the scrub between Laguna Niguel and Laguna Beach shortly before 3 p.m. local time, has burnt roughly 200 acres.

According to fire authorities, no injuries have been recorded as of this moment. As of Wednesday evening, officials had no idea what started the fire.

The fire began as a vegetating fire measuring 50 by 50 feet. It had grown to a 3-acre flame within a few hours before expanding to 30 and eventually 200 acres.

According to fire authorities, strong winds were fanning the flames in an “easterly and northerly direction” when firefighters arrived. 

Fire authorities believed roughly 20 residential properties had been destroyed at 7:30 p.m. local time. 

But said they will have a more exact assessment Thursday morning.

Officials said the area’s steep topography made it impossible to lay hose lines and send ground teams to the vegetation-burning regions.

In the meantime, fixed-wing aircraft were utilized to spray fire retardant on the slope where the fire started to slow the flames’ progress. 

In addition, according to the media, water-dropping aircraft and air tankers were also deployed to put out the fire.

“We’re not accustomed to seeing this time of year, or even in these circumstances,” Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy said Wednesday evening. 

“We’re still talking about a fire year. This is yet another good example. The winds we encountered today were typical. Strong gusts are blowing up the hill from the shore.”

“The key difference is that the vegetation in our valleys in Southern California and across the West is so dry that it doesn’t take much… the fuel moisture is so low that those flames take off and run on us.”

“Unfortunately, I think this is what we will be seeing over many months, if not years,” Fennessy continued.

Many evacuation orders have been issued, as well as voluntary evacuations. 

In addition, roads leading to the area where the fire was burning have been blocked. Virgil Asuncion and authorities think there are around 100 structures in the vicinity.

Laguna Beach High School students were removed from their after-school activities.

Mayor Elaine Gennawey of Laguna Niguel stated that 25 people, two children, and five dogs were waiting at an evacuation center Wednesday night.
