Puducherry: Another ruling congressional lawmaker, A John Kumar, a close confidant of Puducherry Prime Minister V Narayanasamy, resigned from the MLA on Tuesday, in another jolt for the dispensation of the ruling Congress ahead of the Assembly elections to be held. they will celebrate in a few months.

Kumar, who was elected from the Kamaraj Nagar constituency in 2019 by ballot, is the fourth congressional lawmaker to submit his resignation ahead of Congressional Leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Puducherry on Wednesday to kick off the Congressional election campaign.

His resignation comes shortly after top party lawmaker Malladi Krishna Rao, who had previously resigned as Health Minister, stepping down from the MLA post on Monday.

John Kumar called President Sivakolundhu’s vice president in his office and handed him his handwritten resignation letter, official sources said. The Speaker said PTI he was examining the letter and would soon make a decision. He said that he had received Malladi Krishna Rao’s resignation letter from the House by fax on Monday evening.

With his resignation, the strength of the ruling Congress in the territorial Assembly is reduced to 10 and both the Treasury and the Opposition will have 14 members each. The Assembly has 30 elected seats and three nominated seats.

Two ministers, A Namassivayam and Malladi Krishna Rao, and a member of Congress E Theeppainjan had resigned from MLA positions in recent months, while N Dhanavelou was disqualified for alleged anti-party activities in July last year.

The congressional government led by V Narayanasamy has relied on the support of the three-member DMK and a single independent legislator from Mahe N Ramachandran.

On the opposition side, AINRC has seven members while AIADMK has four and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has three, who are nominated members. Congress had won 15 seats in the Assembly in the 2016 Assembly elections.

John Kumar first arrived at the Spokesman’s residence to deliver his resignation. But the Speaker asked him to come to his office on the Assembly campus to present his letter. Kumar then went to the Spokesman’s office and delivered the letter, official sources said.
