Congress wins big and secures 5 out of 7 civic bodies in Mohali
The ruling Congress had the upper hand in seven civic bodies in the Mohali district, the results of which were released on Wednesday. The party, however, performed poorly in Kharar and Nayagaon. Out of 145 districts in seven Municipal Councils (MCs) across the district, Congress won 85, the SAD emerged as the second-largest party by winning 34 districts while the BJP, which faced strong opposition, managed to win in five districts and the AAP won only one room.
Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer (DEO) Girish Dayalan said elections were held for seven MCs from Derabassi, Kharar, Nayagaon, Banur, Lalru, Kurali, and Zirakpur on February 14.
The DC added that the vote count remained peaceful throughout the district and no adverse incidents were reported.
While Congress won in Derabassi, Zirakpur, Lalru, and Banur, it faced stiff competition in the Kharar constituency, where the party failed to win the Nayagaon MC and failed to reach a majority in Kharar. In Kurali too, Congress won nine districts out of a total of 17.
In Kharar, the party faced embarrassment when the brother of Punjab Cabinet Minister Charanjeet Singh Channi, Sukhwant Singh, lost the election by 12 votes to AAP candidate Ram Swaroop from District No. 24.
Of Kharar’s 27 districts, Congress won 10, SAD won eight, independent candidates won eight, and the AAP won one district. The BJP could not win a single neighborhood. Congress won nine districts in Kurali out of a total of 17 districts, SAD won three, BJP won one, and four independent candidates were also victorious.
In Nayagaon, the SAD performed well, winning 10 districts out of 21. While Congress won six, the BJP won three, and independent candidates won two districts.
In Derabassi, Kurali, Lalru, and Banur, the Congress won all the MCs with a clear majority.
Of the 19 districts in Derabassi, the Congress managed to win 13, the SAD three, the BJP one, and two independent candidates came out with great success.
In Zirakpur, Congress won in 23 districts out of 31, while SAD managed to win in eight districts. The AAP and the BJP were unable to open an account in the city.
Congress won 12 of the 13 districts in Banur, while SAD managed to win only one. In Lalru, out of 17 districts, Congress won in 12, independent candidates won in three, while SAD won only two.
